MakerDAO and DAI Creator Proposes New Native Blockchain on Solana (SOL) Fork
MakerDAO co-founder Rune Christensen suggests the development of a Maker (MKR) native blockchain using the Solana (SOL) codebase.
In a recent blog post, Christensen unveiled plans for the fifth phase of "Endgame," Maker's long-term roadmap outlined in May 2022. Initially, the final phase involved the launch of "NewChain," a distinct blockchain designed to enhance ecosystem security and efficiency while interacting with Ethereum via a cutting-edge bridge.
However, after conducting research, Christensen now suggests that a Solana fork could be a viable candidate for NewChain. He cites three primary reasons for favoring Solana's codebase:
-
Technical Optimization: Solana's codebase is highly optimized for operating an efficient blockchain, aligning with NewChain's requirements. It benefits from being engineered after blockchain bottlenecks and challenges were well-understood, addressing Maker's technical debt. Additionally, Solana boasts two client implementations, enhancing resilience.
-
Ecosystem Resilience: Solana's ecosystem demonstrated resilience during the FTX incident. Despite challenges, it maintains a thriving developer community, suggesting long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness in development and maintenance. Maker can tap into this talent pool for contributions.
-
Proven Forking Success: Solana's codebase has already been successfully forked and adapted for appchains. Notably, the Pyth project runs a customized Solana version as its backend, showcasing the adaptability and viability of Solana's codebase.
These factors collectively make Solana a promising choice for NewChain, offering technical excellence, ecosystem stability, and a track record of successful adaptation.
